GOOD AFTERNOON JUDGES!

We’re from Holy Innocents’ high’s Hornet scout troop.

And as hornets it has been a habit passed down from generations to generations that we set challenging tower and bridge models for ourselves in events be it our own troop’s annual camp or the national scout patrol camp.

This is the first time we’re competing in this gateway event, in fact all of the other nine teams are new to this event but nevertheless we have ample knowledge and experience building gateways. (Show pictures of our annual camp gateway photos on laptop)

Gateways are commonly used as an entrance, a welcoming entrance to be exact,

Be it a campfire or a camp but gateways are not only used on special occasions.

Gateways leaves deep 1st impressions on guest going through the gateway be it lousy or not.

Future more gateways are also a form of identification for a particular troop as most people would put up banners baring the troop’s logo or anything that represents them, for us we choose hornets, hornets are hardworking and fearless.

In collaboration with 100 years of scouting and the theme “one world one dream” we decided to do something different, something nobody would have every though about, somewhere nobody would have dared venture beyond.

We’ve gone higher and longer then everyone else and that is what makes us different from the other troops in Singapore.

Our concept for this year’s NPC gateway design is to create a curve.

A curve in pioneering is rather hard to achieve due to the materials we commonly use, wood.

It’s strong but rather impossible to bend, if over exerted it breaks but that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to create a curve, take for example the 6th NPC, our troop’s venture bridge, we used a new element, bamboo.

It was rather strong yet bendable unlike wood BUT we intend to use some simple something basic, nylon ropes.

The reason behind why a curved canopy

The way we create the curved canopy symbolizes harmony like wad the scout law said, “A scout makes friends and build harmonious relationships”, a curve also symbolizes grace and elegance, and curves give a soft and smooth look unless the usual square lashings and sheer lashings we use.

Each curve represents one of the scout laws, together 5 curved canopy creates a giant canopy which symbolizes scouting as a shelter, under the roof (in the house of god)

scout law

1) a scout is to be trusted
2) a scout is loyal
3) a scout is helpful
4) a scout has courage in all difficulties
5) a scout makes frens and builds harmonous relationships.

Many things can happen under a shelter, bonding sharing, building harmonious relations with each other and that’s wad scouting is about.

The ropes used to make up the canopy represents each drop of blood and sweat, each joyous, glorious, euphoric, painful moment shared and shed by all the scouts around the world throughout these 100 years of scouting and the gateway somehow becomes some sort of a tribute or memorial gateway for them.
